Acceptable Forms of Identification
To ensure a smooth and secure notarization process, it is essential that each signer presents acceptable identification. In Virginia, the notary public must verify the identity of the signer to prevent fraud and ensure the integrity of the notarization process. Below is an overview of the acceptable forms of identification:
Valid Government-Issued ID:
-
Driver’s License issued by any U.S. state or territory.
-
U.S. Passport or a valid passport from another country.
-
U.S. Military ID.
-
State-Issued Identification Card (for those who do not have a driver’s license).
-
Permanent Resident Card (Green Card).
Foreign Identification:
-
A foreign passport that is stamped by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) may be accepted.
Other Acceptable IDs:
-
Employee ID cards (from government entities or recognized employers).
-
Credit or Debit Cards that contain a photo and signature (these must meet additional criteria and should be discussed with the notary in advance).

What to Look for in Identification
-
Photo: The ID must have a clear photograph of the signer.
-
Signature: The ID must include the signature of the signer.
-
Expiration Date: The ID must be current or, in the case of certain IDs like passports, not expired for more than 5 years.
When Additional Forms of Identification Are Needed
In some situations, the notary may require additional or alternative forms of identification if the primary ID is insufficient or the signer’s identity cannot be verified. For example:
-
If the ID does not have a photo or signature, the notary may ask for a second form of ID.
-
If the signer cannot provide adequate identification, the notary may need to use personal knowledge of the signer or a credible witness to verify their identity.
